standardGlobal Warming? Bah, I’m Being Raptured!

I am consistently amazed at the crazy ignorance of many in the religious right. I never understand their reluctance to even acknowledge that global warming is a reality and that maybe it’s a bad idea to continually destroy the earth, take what we want, and pump toxins into the air, land, and water all so we can keep on consuming.

Their rejection of science in this area seems to run counter to what Jesus would teach if he was here today, in my opinion. He was a humble guy, lived modestly, repeatedly told people to give up worldly possessions, it doesn’t seem to me that he would advocate for the rampant consumerism in the US today. He also talked about how every tree, plant, bird was important to God, so I would think his followers would be more concerned with saving them.

Sadly, that is not the case for the most part. Once again while reading our local blogs I ran across Carisa Wells’ ignorant ranting on how global warming is a hoax invented by Al Gore. I’m not sure what she thinks the motivation is for such a hoax but she is very adamant about it. See this article for more of her nonsense. There are things in her article that I somewhat agree with but for the most part I find her ignorant and self righteous. We’ve butted heads quite a few times.

So, back to my original point, I can think of only one reason the Christians of our nation dismiss our climate crisis and our duty to the environment; because they sincerely believe that they will be raptured soon so none of it will matter. If this seems crazy to you, that’s a good sign. While Christians have long been planning the “imminent” return of their Christ, they have also done a horrible job of planning for any other outcome.

I recently attended church service in my home town which I haven’t done for over 5 years, and the message shared, while delivered very well by my cousin, was the very same message as five years ago. The church was on the threshhold of moving to the next level of God’s plans for it. He was going to use this church to change the community and the region. Of course, there were no concrete plans shared, or even ideas thrown about. Everyone is just supposed to be ready for that next step, the same one they were supposed to be ready for 5 years ago, 10 years ago, and as far back as I can remember.

Because Christians are basically just living until the rapture, they become stagnant and repetitive and their ignorance just increases. They don’t move forward in their knowledge, they don’t adapt to the changes happening around them, they stay in their cocoon of isolation waiting for the day Jesus comes down from the clouds and takes them home. So what if Earth is dying a slow, painful, preventable death, they won’t be around to see it.

standardTop 5 Reasons For Republican Sex Scandals

Please note that these are just my observations and opinions. I am by no means saying that Christian Republicans are the only people with dirty little secrets. I am merely commenting on what appears to be a growing issue within the Republican ranks. In the last couple of years the list has grown and grown [...]

standardProgress For Gay Rights?

Today the House passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act which would make it illegal for employers to discriminate in the processes of hiring, firing, promoting or paying an employee due to their sexual orientation. The one thing that this bill did not include was protection for transgendered individuals. Sen. Edward Kennedy (D,MA) will now introduce comparable [...]

standardPhelps’ Not That Different From Fundies

Living in Topeka, KS, I am subjected almost daily to the bigotry and hatred of the Phelps’ clan. If you don’t know who they are they are the members and leaders of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka that are in the habit of picketing pretty much anything with day-glo signs graphically depicting anti-gay messages. [...]

standardSpend and Spend Republicans

The other day I wrote about the President’s veto of a highly popular water projects bill. In that piece I attacked Bush for making a partisan political ploy out of the serious issue of fiscal responsibility. After never vetoing a single spending bill while his Republican cronies were in power, Bush has now vetoed several [...]

standardExecuting Justice?

On Friday a Jury deemed that in the name of justice Lisa Montgomery should be sentenced to death for the horrific killing of 23 year old Bobbi Jo Stinnett. Of course this is not the end of the line for Montgomery, there will be many appeals, and thousands and thousands of dollars spent fighting to [...]

standardThe Culture of Life

Whenever I hear a member of the Religious Right utter this phrase I have to laugh. Surely they must be kidding? No? They really believe that they are furthering life? Jesus Christ we’re in trouble. It sounds so innocuous, wonderful, affirming. Most people want to be on the side of life. In Republican circles where [...]

standardLetter to Todd Tiahrt

After seeing that one of my state representatives voted against the SCHIP expansion again, after the revisions that addressed each of his “concerns” I became angry. I wrote the following letter to him and will keep our readers up to date on his response, if there is one. At this point it seems that it [...]

standardOklahoma Lawmakers Say No to the Quaran

To promote tolerance, a diversity group in Oklahoma bestowed gifts on Oklahoma lawmakers, copies of the Quaran. At least 18 of the state legislators will return the books. They feel that the Quaran condones killing innocent people. State Representative, Rex Duncan stated; “most Oklahomans do not endorse the idea of killing innocent women and children [...]

standardBillions of Dollars, Equipment Vanished in Iraq

George W. is now asking for more money to fund the Iraq war. I was just listening to him on Countdown making it seem as thought Congress doesn’t really support our troops as they fight him on every spending and supplemental spending bill. He comes off as so self righteously indignant that anyone could ever [...]
