New “Clean Coal” Ad

I think whoever put this ad together did an excellent job.  Subtle, effective, and well thought out.  While I am personally not super anti-coal like some of my friends I do feel that the clean coal myth needs to be addressed.  My sincere hope is that as alternative ways to produce energy are perfected and implemented we will see less and less coal used.   Actually thats almost a near certanty as alternative energy is both cleaner and cheaper over the long run.

Anyhow, here is another video by the Reality Campaign.

Have a great Christmas everyone, I’ll see you again next week.

Earth Hour 2008

Categorized: Activism

Im sure you have noticed the new look here and at several other websites. Well if you haven’t heard yet today at 8pm local time we are joining the world in turning out the lights. This is just our little way of helping to raise awareness of the global climate change issue. If you want to learn more please read the official Earth Hour website here.

Global Warming? Bah, I’m Being Raptured!

I am consistently amazed at the crazy ignorance of many in the religious right. I never understand their reluctance to even acknowledge that global warming is a reality and that maybe it’s a bad idea to continually destroy the earth, take what we want, and pump toxins into the air, land, and water all so we can keep on consuming.

Their rejection of science in this area seems to run counter to what Jesus would teach if he was here today, in my opinion. He was a humble guy, lived modestly, repeatedly told people to give up worldly possessions, it doesn’t seem to me that he would advocate for the rampant consumerism in the US today. He also talked about how every tree, plant, bird was important to God, so I would think his followers would be more concerned with saving them.

Sadly, that is not the case for the most part. Once again while reading our local blogs I ran across Carisa Wells’ ignorant ranting on how global warming is a hoax invented by Al Gore. I’m not sure what she thinks the motivation is for such a hoax but she is very adamant about it. See this article for more of her nonsense. There are things in her article that I somewhat agree with but for the most part I find her ignorant and self righteous. We’ve butted heads quite a few times.

So, back to my original point, I can think of only one reason the Christians of our nation dismiss our climate crisis and our duty to the environment; because they sincerely believe that they will be raptured soon so none of it will matter. If this seems crazy to you, that’s a good sign. While Christians have long been planning the “imminent” return of their Christ, they have also done a horrible job of planning for any other outcome.

I recently attended church service in my home town which I haven’t done for over 5 years, and the message shared, while delivered very well by my cousin, was the very same message as five years ago. The church was on the threshhold of moving to the next level of God’s plans for it. He was going to use this church to change the community and the region. Of course, there were no concrete plans shared, or even ideas thrown about. Everyone is just supposed to be ready for that next step, the same one they were supposed to be ready for 5 years ago, 10 years ago, and as far back as I can remember.

Because Christians are basically just living until the rapture, they become stagnant and repetitive and their ignorance just increases. They don’t move forward in their knowledge, they don’t adapt to the changes happening around them, they stay in their cocoon of isolation waiting for the day Jesus comes down from the clouds and takes them home. So what if Earth is dying a slow, painful, preventable death, they won’t be around to see it.

EPA Sued by CA and Other States

California has filed suit against the Environmental Protection Agency for wrongfully denying them a waiver to enforce stricter greenhouse gas emissions on automobiles within the state. The EPA stance is supported by the Bush administration which insists that states do not have the authority to set their own limits, even those stricter than the national guidelines. At least 15 other states are expected to join in the lawsuit.

This would be the first time that the EPA has outright blocked a waiver application from CA since 1967 when Congress gave the state the ability to obtain them. Because of California’s location, the consequences of global warming are very real and potentially devastating to the state. Rising water would erode the shoreline and top the existing levees, couple that with the melting of the sierra snow pack which could trigger a major water crisis, and it’s easy to see what stake CA has in better environmental policy.

EPA administrator Stephen L. Johnson denied the waiver on December 19 citing that emissions from new vehicles was something being addressed on a national level which would be more efficient overall than different regulations for different states. He dismissed the argument that California faces unique threats due to global warming.

“There’s absolutely no justification for the administrator’s action. It’s illegal. It’s unconscionable and a gross dereliction of duty.” ~ Attorney General Jerry Brown said Wednesday

Defending Johnson’s decision, EPA spokesman Jonathan Shradar stated in an emailed statement that the federal Energy Independence and Security Act “is a more beneficial national approach to a national problem, which establishes an aggressive standard for all 50 states — as opposed to a lower standard in California and a patchwork of other states.” California officials disagree and assert that their law is actually stricter than the national standard and would require automobile manufacturers to cut emissions by one-third in new vehicles by 2016 or reach an average of 36.8 mpg. By contrast the new national standards would raise the nationwide fuel economy standards to an average of 35 mpg by 2020.

Hmmm, it seems to me that the spokesman for the EPA would have his facts straight before sending an emailed statement defending a ludicrous ruling. Although, fact checking has not been high on the list of this administration’s priorities. In what is actually a coherent and spot on statement CA governor Arnold Schwarzenegger stated,

“(EPA officials) are ignoring the will of millions of people who want their government to take action in the fight against global warming. That’s why, at the very first legal opportunity, we’re suing to reverse the U.S. EPA’s wrong decision.”

So the EPA and the Bush Administration are Sinners for trying to curb positive measures to protect our environment and caving, once again, to corporate greed. This promises to be a long, drawn out battle that will quite probably go all the way to the Supreme Court. We will keep you updated.

Nobel Peace Prize Goes to Gore

Today, along with the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Al Gore has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. This recognizes everything that he has done to get the message to the world that we are in a global climate crisis. He has shown millions of people how this has come about, what man’s role in it is, and also things to do to correct the situation.

Not only did he take the opportunity in his acceptance speech to further talk about his important message, he is also donating his part of the $1.5million recipients receive to the Alliance for Climate Protection. This is a non profit that works to spread the message about global climate change, it’s source, and the dangers.

Many have wondered if a win by Gore would throw him into the presidential race mix. He has not addressed that since the win so, of course, it’s only conjecture at this point. His advisers say that he is showing no interest in the 08 bid. This does not deter thousands of Democrats who have stepped up the heat in the last several days to get Gore running. Draftgore.com took out a full page ad in the NY Times this week beseeching the former Vice President to give it a go.

Because most Americans see global warming and understand our role in it, they may see Gore as the go to candidate to make sure something is done. It also helps that he is seen as the real winner of the 2000 election, who had the office of president stolen from him. Name recognition is not a problem for Gore, as millions have seen his documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, watched him on countless news programs, and of course know him from American politics.

I am giving Al Gore the title of Saint today, not because I would love him to run for office, but because he is perhaps the largest voice in the world urging man to change the things that are destroying our planet. He’s the reason that I now have compact fluorescent bulbs in every fixture of my home. Thank you Al Gore for bringing the discussion of global warming into most homes in America and millions all over the world.
