Today is a sad day for our nation’s children. After weeks of lies and smears the “pro-life until birth” crowd has re-affirmed their stance on life by denying the expansion of health care to millions of children. I am truly disappointed that more Republicans could not have put the well being of their constituency above partisan politics to support the passage of a bill that has the potential to help so many.
The final vote fell just shy 273 to 156, 9 13 (( edited to correct my bad math )) votes short of passing. For those who enjoy a moral victory I guess this is a good one. We managed to convince 44 Republicans to cross the isle in what counts as a strong bi-partisan effort in today’s politics. I am particularly pissed at the two Democrats who crossed over. They were Marshall(Georgia) and Taylor (Mississippi). Democrats are the party of the working people, maybe these guys didn’t get the memo.
Well, just wanted to get this out there while its still fresh. I hope that I never lose my job, and with it my family’s health insurance, otherwise this moral victory won’t make me feel better at all. I feel sorry for the millions of children who won’t appreciate this either. Luckily the Democrat who makes it to the White House next will care more about the health of our children than whatever it is Republicans care about. War, death, and killing I guess.

What a sad day for our so called “representative democracy”. With a large majority of Americans in support of SCHIP it’s appalling that the Republicans shunned their constituents. In fact a recent poll by CBS News showed that a whopping 81% of voters favored the SCHIP expansion.

The failure of the SCHIP bill is positive and will lead to more honest debate on solutions for providing medical care for the neediest citizens. This bill would lead us further down the road of socialized medicine. Which is a proven failure in Canada and Britain. Socialized care always devolves into sub-standard care. It leads to rationing because the freedom of choice is removed from the equation of health care.
We need real solutions to problems of poverty and the caring for the uninsured. We need people to step up donate for medical care for the needy. One of the leading contributors to poverty is the break-up of the mom and dad family, usually caused by liberal divorce laws and an anything goes culture. Health savings accounts look like a useful tool for insuring some of the uninsured.
It is fundamentally not fair to reach into someone else’s pocket to pay for your medical costs.
Do you really think we can trust our government to run such a program well? Consider the social security program. Our government has spent every penny coming in from payments and left I Owe You’s in place of our payments. The money we pay in should be in savings earning interest for us. What the government is doing is fraud.
