Samina Malik A.K.A the Lyrical Terrorist, who was convicted of thought crimes has escaped a long prison sentence (( 12/7/2007 The New York Times Britain: ‘Lyrical Terrorist’ Spared Prison )) . Instead of the 10 years she could have been sentenced she was given a suspended 9 month sentence. Obviously this show of compassion and dare we say common sense from the courts was the right choice. History has shown that you cannot destroy a message by censoring and punishing the writers. Instead in the face of oppression the message only flourashes and grows.
See the story I wrote last month “What’s On Your Bookshelf” for more information on this story and my take on it.
As bad as Samina Malik’s situation was I cant help but think it would be worse in America. I would like some help on this one though. I simply do not have the time to properly research this so I was hoping one of you will. What protections would an American have in the same situation now that Habeas Corpus has been destroyed?

The article I wrote entitled 10 Reasons Not to Vote for Ron Paul has generated tons of comments, most from his supporters. Here is just a quick response to some of these. I have not provided references within this response but please see the previous article for tons of them.
Ok, so I am going to try and put my thoughts down and make sense while doing it. A whole lot of responses have been along the vein of “But he’s only going to be president, I don’t agree with him but he can’t mess up that badly.”
What about Congress, the Supreme Court? These other branches are not going to be filled with people who will make sure that he won’t mess things up too bad. When you think about who you are going to vote for, you have to look at the whole picture.
The fact is that Ron Paul has sponsored 346 bills since Jan 7, 1997, of which 341 haven’t made it out of committee and 0 were successfully enacted. He may have big ideas and want to really change things but he hasn’t been successful thus far.
So if I buy into his rhetoric, which I don’t, I am still faced with the fact that the Paul presidency could be an entire 4 years with a “lame duck” president.
The Bush administration has raped this country, and others, and left us with a huge gaping hole where once we had our civil rights and integrity. Again, Paul’s rhetoric sounds nice, “The Constitution!” is his war cry. However, as a liberal Democrat, it is very important to me to ensure that all of our citizens really are afforded equal rights. Ron Paul does not support this, with his words he doesn’t support this, with his record he doesn’t support this.
People have picked apart my arguments and most have countered with inaneness or just craziness. For instance, it certainly does matter on the issue of abortion whether or not his record matches what he says. He’s personally against it but would leave it up to the states, yet he has several time proposed legislation that would label a fetus a human. Now, in all reality how would that not lead to a ban on abortion, at least for the majority of the country?
So, then there’s an abortion ban and still no good sex education or contraceptive availability. Even if America defies statistics and abortions end there, what happens to the thousands of unwanted babies? Social services that would have helped them are gone under Paul, it may surprise the Religious Right, but unwanted children aren’t exactly snatched up and adopted. What then?
Our homosexual citizens will see no relief in their quest for equal rights. Again his personal views and record don’t support his rhetoric on this issue. Like most president’s he will have a cabinet and nominate justices that are in line with his views.
Our environment will be further destroyed. He sponsored a bill that would stop conservation efforts that interfered with recreational boating. That doesn’t sound to me like someone with good priorities.
It has been shown in our recent history, remember the Industrial Revolution, that without some sort of regulation (ie OSHA and the minimum wage) business owners take great advantage of their workers, at times to the cost of their lives. Just because someon has an ideal of how things should be that doesn’t change basic human nature. Businesses will still be greedy and without oversight we will end up right back to those good ol’ days of worker abuse.
Now, do I think that the government is run efficiently? Absolutely not, but I do believe that there are ways to fix the things that are broken without removing the whole system and thus ensuring chaos. Someone said either here or on Reddit, that basically both Republicans and Democrats want smaller government just in different places. The difference in my view, is that Democrats want our people protected and our tax money to fund programs to help the taxpayer. The other side would do the opposite, cut social services, give incentives to big business, and further discrimination.
While Paul talks a good talk it is clear, to me, that he is just like every other Republican candidate underneath except a lot more eccentric. And just to reiterate I encourage EVERYONE to RESEARCH on their own, I do not expect, nor want, anyone to make decisions based on other peoples’ opinions.

Tom Tancredo is widely known as the candidate most likely to appeal to racists, bigots, and xenophobes. So, aside from going for the conservative fundamentalist Christian vote, what else is Tom Tancredo doing? Here are three television commercials that he has run, outlining his top three issues for presidency. I think that they pretty much say everything about his platform.
So there you have it, the top 3 issues in the Tom Tancredo presidency. Basically his message is that if you hate the scary brown people as much as he does then he wants your vote. Because things like the economy, civil rights, national security, and the Iraq war can wait until the next president; right now we need a 2,000 mile long wall across Mexico. That will surely stop the Mexicans since they wont be able to raid across on their horses. Or was that the Mongolians?
Seriously, Ron Paul should join forces with Tom Tancredo. No force on earth could stand up against their combined might of crazy and asshole. They would be invincible.

As anyone with a blog, YouTube account, MySpace page, or web site knows Ron Paul supporters are everywhere! The internet is filled with them. Although we are a progressive blog and both William and I support Democratic candidates, vocally, we are constantly barraged with pleas and “stories” to win us over. The frightening thing that I have witnessed is that many liberal voters are giving some credence to Ron Paul’s campaign and message. He somehow comes across as different or better than the run of the mill conservatives filling the Republican ticket.
I do not support Ron Paul in ANY and I find his Congressional record and policies to be, at times, even scarier than his counterparts. The only thing that I have found to agree with him on is the fact that he does not support the war in Iraq. After extensive research I have compiled a list of 10 reasons NOT to vote for Ron Paul!
So there you have it, my 10 reasons not to vote for Ron Paul. Please take the time to thoroughly review the records of the people running for office so you know where they really stand. Ron Paul has good rhetoric and he opposes the war but he’s not a good man in the human rights sense of the phrase. He is pretty much like every other Republican but more insidious. Here is a video that you should watch after reading this article. Really listen to what he says and how he says it. Watch out for the sneaky ones and RESEARCH! (( Orcinus: Ron Paul’s Record in Congress ))
UPDATE: I am posting a blog entry response to some of the feedback a little after 1 pm CST. I am also working on a more thorough referenced response that will hopefully be up by this evening. Also, the majority of the comments on this post appear to be thoughtful and honest and we appreciate that, the dialog that takes place between two or more conflicting viewpoints is much more productive when done in this manner.

Please note that these are just my observations and opinions. I am by no means saying that Christian Republicans are the only people with dirty little secrets. I am merely commenting on what appears to be a growing issue within the Republican ranks. In the last couple of years the list has grown and grown so I think the situation should be examined. Here are the Top 5 Reasons for Republican Sex Scandals, in my opinion, of course.
Power. Most of us equate “Republican” with “Christian Right” they do not all fall neatly into that category but many do. That’s quite a combination of power, political influence and God. Since most sex crimes are about power and control and not sexual release, it stands to reason that the sort of people who would commit said crimes would try and place themselves in a position of power, such as Congressman, church elder, etc.
Sexual hangups stemming from a lifetime of “sex is dirty” lectures at home, at the pulpit, and in our supposedly religion free schools. This one is pretty self explanatory, make something dirty or taboo and it becomes more wanted, yet not openly for the most part. Like Larry Craig in the stall, the desires of our religious Republican leaders are hidden, making them all the more scandalous when they are revealed.
The Church encourages members to be closed to the outside world, creating a haven for those people who might be pedophiles or other such lowly creatures to select and prey upon their victims. We see the perfect example of this in the Catholic priest scandals. The Church wanted it all handled internally so instead of prosecution, the offenders were shuffled around receiving even more opportunities to hurt children.
Republicans and the Religious Right do not foster amongst themselves, or anywhere else for that matter, a furtherance of civil rights. Women are subject to their husbands, minorities are not given equal treatment, and if you are gay then you are damned. This automatically leads to secrecy and shame if you are different, a desire to keep things, such as abuse, quiet and not to “rock the boat”. A common family theme from religious, conservative households is that what happens in the home stays in the home. Again this is something that is seen on a larger scale within religious communities themselves. When progress is not being made on personal rights and protections the people who need help the most are ignored and left to fend for themselves. Thus children will be molested and not feel free to say something, a woman (or man) may be pressured into an inappropriate relationship and not feel like they can report it, or a gay Congressperson or clergy member may push their identities so far down that their true selves are revealed through desperate or illegal acts. (Gay hookers and meth)
The lack of an internal moral compass. I suspect that this will be the most controversial of my opinions on this matter. Please let me explain. Whenever I am debating anything with a zealous religious conservative I am bound to be confronted with “If we didn’t have the Bible we wouldn’t know how to act morally” or “Without God to judge our actions we would have no reason to behave ethically.”
This argument infuriates me on several levels. The first, of course, is that I am a very nice person. I do not murder, torture, rape, pillage, or plunder and I do not have a personal relationship with any deity, I do not follow the teachings of a holy book, indeed I do not believe in the fairy tales of religion. The second reason this argument angers me is that it is not factually based. Just a little bit of research will show that secular societies are much more peaceful than religious ones, for the most part.
This is not something that is able to be logically argued with a Christian the majority of the time. They really don’t understand how anyone could live a moral life without the bible or a god watching over them in judgment. That leads me to believe that these individuals may not have a moral compass like millions of other people do. The common sense voice inside that tells you it’s not ok to steal, lie, and kill. In fact, I believe that many are actually fairly blood thirsty and hateful people. Nothing gets to me more than the “culture of life” advocating for the death penalty, wanting to stop social services, and promoting discrimination against whatever difference is in style at the moment. These are the people from which spring the likes of the Minutemen at our borders and an administration who is killing thousands of people in the name of their god.
Because most religious people grow up being indoctrinated into their belief system it is easy to see how this lack of a moral compass can develop. They follow a loosely tied together historical book to the letter (on some things) that was written and compiled by men with definite political, social, and personal agendas of their own. A book that promotes slavery, the oppression of women, rape as a way to celebrate victorious bloody battles, murder, incest, and the list goes on and on. Because I believe that most humans innately possess the feelings and understanding needed to behave in a moral, ethical manner, it makes sense to me that one would recoil from the vile teachings of the bible. This creates a maelstrom of confusion within the believer. They have been taught that this is the holy word of god and yet it goes against our natural feelings of what is right, this begins a struggle in which the natural feelings of revulsion lose out to the promise of eternal life and blessings. For most people this is not a conscious process or choice, they have been told over and over that the Bible is right and unerring so it follows a natural path. This then leads to the reality that these people have effectively squashed their inner voice of right and wrong and thus we see this tragic process played out in the media.
So there you have it, the Top 5 Reasons for Republican Sex Scandals, as I see it. Admittedly this is my own conjecture, I am interested in your take on the numerous sexual (and other) scandals plaguing our religious right as a whole and the Republican party specifically.
